Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): Causes, Symptoms & Treatments

at Omniya Clinic in London

What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)?

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a genetic hormone disorder which women are born with. It tends to become evident after puberty and is a condition which is linked to diabetes (especially insulin resistance). Symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome include irregular periods, excessive facial hair, acne, anxiety and difficulty losing weight. It can also result in fertility problems. In women with polycystic ovary syndrome their luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) don’t work in sequence and so disturb ovulation.

What Treatments are Available at Omniya for PCOS?

Diet and hormonal therapies are commonly prescribed for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome while laser treatment can help with the symptoms of excess facial hair. Maintaining a healthy weight can help with the symptoms as well as the effectiveness of hormonal therapy. The latter tends to be in the form of antiandrogens. This means that they reduce the impact of the male hormones (or androgens) such as testosterone. Some of the most common drugs used in hormone therapy include Spironolactone, flutamide, finasteride and cyproterone acetate.

Laser treatment can help permanently remove facial hair (as well as help with acne). It works by targeting the hair follicle using light energy in pulses. This light energy targets melanin in the hair follicle and prevents hair regrowth. The surrounding skin and tissue remain unharmed since the laser only affects its target, the root of the unwanted individual hair.
